Cleaning & Laundry Products: The Healthier, Greener and Cruelty-Free Alternatives

The testing of products and ingredients on animals is one thing that really grinds my gears.

Every year, tens of millions of dogs, cats, mice, rabbits, guinea pigs, monkeys and other animals suffer and die for cleaning and laundry products in laboratory experiments all over the world. It even happens here in Melbourne. They have chemicals forced into their eyes, down their throats and applied to their skin and pain relief is never administered. These gorgeous, defenceless animals endure the excruciating pain forced upon them for days, months and even years, all for our cleaning and laundry products (….and makeup, skincare, stationary products and more). Beautiful animals suffering so we can clean our glass windows or wash our clothes in a fabric softener. Shameful.

And what’s worse? Science has moved forward over the past decade and animal testing is now considered an outdated practice, however so many companies still continue to test their ingredients and products on our furry and fluffy friends

. There are almost 10,000 chemical ingredients that are already established and considered safe to use which these companies could be turning to, but they continue to hunt for new ones and make animals suffer in the process. Thousands of them every single year. Not naming any names…… *cough* Spray ‘N’ Wipe, Windex and Cold Power.

But don’t despair.

Believe it or not there are some fantastic brands on the market that refuse to partake in any form of unnecessary animal testing and actually give a rats about producing a less-toxic, environmentally-friendly and safer product. Products that

are better for you, your family, the earth and animals. Who wouldn’t want that?

I’ve compiled a list of fantastic go-to’s below that are all doing the right thing by everyone and everything. They are all wonderful, effective and above-par brands that you should consider lining your laundry cabinets with from now on. Puh-lease.

Bondi Wash

Bondi Wash is an Australian made and owned company producing a bucketload of amazing products using natural Australian botanicals. Products for the home include a bench, glass and mist spray’s and a floor wash and all of them are entirely plant-based, non-toxic and biodegradable.

The fragrance found in Bondi Wash products is absolutely beautiful and very ‘Australian’ without using the classic tea tree and eucalyptus scents. Bondi Wash avoid any synthetic fragrances and their products are virtually as natural as you can get. And what’s even better? Their packaging is super swish which earns them extra brownie points.

With a whole host of other products including a yoga mat spray and one for your furry friends kennel, Bondi Wash is a brand you can turn to for all your domestic goddess needs.

Available from Bondi Wash or click here to find your local stockist.

Earth Choice

Earth Choice is my go to when i’m stuck at the supermarket and I need something pronto. They are a fantastic company producing a whole host of top-notch products and are one of very few brands available at supermarkets that are actually cruelty-free (Orange Power is another one).

Earth Choice are an Australian owned and operated company that are under the Natures Organics umbrella. They play a strong focus on the environment and all of their products are based on the philosophy of creating environmentally responsible products, of the best quality, at the lowest possible price. And what’s even better? Natures Organics and Earth Choice use no animal-derived ingredients and refuse to sell their products to China, ensuring they remain cruelty-free. Champions!

Available from Coles, Woolworths and Independent grocers.

The Laundress

If you’re after a certain type of cleaning or laundry product, you can guarantee that The Laundress will have it. The Laundress are an eco-friendly line of detergent, fabric care and home-cleaning products that are good for you, the things you love and the environment. All of their products are 100% biodegradable and are free from phosphates, allergens, bleach, parabens and phthalates. In other words, free of crap.

Added bonus? Their packaging is super neat and all of their products are completely cruelty-free and contain no animal-derived ingredients. It’s a win on all fronts.

Available via The Natural Supply Co or Peter’s of Kensington.

Ecostore are an impressive range of household cleaning products that were founded in 1993 by New Zealander Malcom ‘Ecoman’ Rands and his wife Melanie from their home in a fully sustainable eco village (which they co-built) in the rural area of Northland, New Zealand. Ecostore was created around the idea of providing affordable everyday household cleaning products that would enable people to live a healthier lifestyle without the use of conventional toxic cleaners.

Every single ingredient used on an Ecostore product is listed on the packaging so there is no confusion as to what you are exposing yourself too. They use only essential oils to fragrance products and there is never any hidden nasties – there is a guide on the Ecostore website about every single ingredient they use and what it does.

All of the Ecostore products are of superior quality and they can be picked up from most good health stores and Ecostore online.

Tri Nature

Another fantastic Australian made and owned company, Tri Nature has walked on the cleaning stomping ground for over 20 years.

Tri Nature believe you shouldn’t have to compromise on quality or performance when choosing natural and this is evident in the efficiency and cleaning power of their products. They have a huge range of cleaning and laundry products (baby, car, skincare etc too) all at affordable prices. Their products are made from only natural and renewable materials and are free from phosphates, nitrates, petrochemicals and animal-derived ingredients.

Tri Nature is readily available at a bunch of health stores and via Tri Nature (go figure).

Murchison-Hume products have been in my laundry and kitchen cabinets for years. Their entire range is cruelty-free and vegan and everything is made in Sydney from organic ingredients which are free from phosphates, bleach, caustics, sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and other environmental pollutants.

I’m a big fan of their dishwashing soap, floor cleaner and glass cleaners, but if i’m honest, all of their products are absolutely fantastic. They also provide 100% recyclable refill bottles so you can keep your existing bottle and refill as required.

*Murchison-Hume have apparently recently gone into administration, so if you love their products be sure to grab them while you can.

Available from Murchison-Hume and various other retailers.

  • Jacqui Lamont says:

Hi Anna, can I also mention Vere. Beautiful cleaning products, hair and skin care etc. I’ve been using them for years. All made in Melbourne, all cruelty free, no animal products. Sandra, who started the company used to have a store in Hampton Street until recently. Now she’s selling online and through Hamish and Grace in Carpenter Street, Brighton. Can highly recommend. If you get a chance have a look at the website,

I’m hoping I get a chance to see you talk at Edgar’s Mission. Myself and two daughters are volunteering on WAD so might miss out on seeing the speakers. Keeping fingers crossed for nice weather.

    • Anna says:

      Hi Jacqui!

I’ve only just seen this comment – i’m so sorry! I’ve been so busy the last couple of months that I haven’t been getting to Earth by Anna nearly as much as I would like.

Did you get a chance to hear me talk at World Vegan Day? It was such a shame about World Animal Day at Edgar’s Mission. I was so disasppointed!

I am going to check out Vere now, thank you so much for the recommendation. I always like to support local where possible.
