If you are a chocolate lover (who isn’t?) then you will absolutely love this raw, organic homemade body butter. As it starts to get cooler again, it’s important that you are nourishing your skin with the right moisturising ingredients to ensure it stays soft and supple through the cooler months. With heating, overall moisture loss in the air and most people drinking less water, your skin is the first organ to show the side effects of the cooler months.
So, why cacao? The cacao bean is rich in magnesium and full of flavonoids which act as natural antioxidants. Raw cacao powder also contains more than double the amount of antioxidants than red wine and almost triple that of green tea. It is made by pressing untreated and unheated cocoa beans which keeps the beneficial enzymes in the cocoa and removes the fat, which then becomes raw cacao butter. In its solidified form, raw cacao butter looks like a giant block of white chocolate. These two extracts, raw cacao powder and raw cacao butter, are two of the main ingredients in this heavenly body butter.
NB: Raw cacao powder is not to be confused with cocoa powder. Cocoa powder (think hot chocolate) is the heat-treated alternative that contains far less antioxidants and nutrient properties.
By making your own moisturiser, you’re skipping out on using half the crap on your skin that regular store-bought products contain. Sulfates, preservatives, fillers and the like are staple ingredients in these products and as I’ve mentioned many times before, your skin is your largest organ and it absorbs every. single. thing that is put onto it. A bit of DIY so you know exactly what is going into your body never hurt anyone.
Now, if you make it past the temptation to eat it (well done), applying it can be a little messy. Even though the mixture may appear as a solid in your jar, as soon as it touches your skin, it will melt and glide over your body effortlessly…. and you’ll start to look like you’ve walked out of a sewerage pit or had an incredibly bad spray tan. But don’t worry! It will all be worth it.

I always put mine on right before bed and straight after i’ve showered. The steam from the shower opens your pores and allows for easier absorption of the oils. I also make sure I find my oldest, daggiest pyjamas and wear them to bed as well so you don’t end up with brown marks on your sheets (nothing suss, ay). In the morning, you will wake up with the softest, smoothest, most nourished skin and you will notice that the slimy oil you went to bed with has been completely absorbed into your skin. You will no longer look like a swamp creature and smell like a giant piece of dark chocolate, I promise.
100g of Raw Organic Unrefined Cacao Butter
1 cup of Raw Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
1/2 cup of Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1/2 cup Raw Organic Cacao Powder
1 airtight jar
NB: Want to turn it into a choc-mint body butter? Simply add a few drops of your favourite peppermint essential oil. Or why not try orange? Your options are only limited by the size of your essential oil cabinet.
1. Place raw cacao butter and coconut oil over saucepan in a heat-proof bowl and melt into liquid form.
2. Remove from heat and stir through raw cacao powder and olive oil until you have a smooth texture.
3. Place in freezer for approximately half an hour or until mixture solidifies.
4. Take a handheld mixer (I used a Thermomix with the butterfly insert) and whip until peaks start to form on top of the mixture.
