Supermarkets & Chemists: Cruelty-Free Made Easy

So you’ve run out of your favourite foundation, shampoo, eye-makeup remover or toothpaste and it’s 7pm at night and none of your usual go-to places are open. And you need this certain product. Badly. Your only options are Coles, Woolworths, Priceline and the odd Chemist. Crap, crap, crap! We’ve all been there. What do you do? What brand do you choose? Will you even survive such a dreadful situation?

Believe it or not, fantastic cruelty-free and vegan products can be found regularly at supermarkets and chemists. As the demand continues to rise for eco-friendly and cruelty-free brands, the giants like Coles and Woolworths continue to stock their shelves with products that fit the green and ‘not tested on animals’ bill. Brands like Sukin, Australian Pure and White Glo are readily available in most supermarket chains and chemists around the country. As is Natio, Face of Australia and Bondi Sands. So when that ‘crap’ moment hits and you freeze in a moment of panic because you don’t have any foundation for your hot date, relax. There is always something out there that will have your gorgeous cruelty-free back.

I’ve compiled a list of cruelty-free products that are regularly sold at supermarkets and chemists that will hold you up until you can get back to your trusty favourites. Who knows, you may actually fall in love with some of these beauties. A lot of these brands actually feature in my bathroom cabinets on the regular and I can fully vouch for them and say they’re not only amazing, but probably the best. Sometimes you don’t need the whizz-bang, super expensive glamazon products to do a great job.

The best ones could be right on your (late night) (supermarket) doorstep.

Side note: If you’re ever unsure about a brand or product, look for the symbols below on the back of packaging. If you’re a vegan, be sure to keep your eyes out for ingredients such as beeswax, carmine, lanolin, gelatine, tallow and collagen. These feral ingredients are often hidden in products when you least expect them.
